Week of 14 October 2024: When we talk about energy trends...

When I look back on what has happened in my lifetime, both at work and at home, I see ever increasing energy uses, some of which may not be smart. Computers and the Internet, and all the ancillary issues that go with these (cloud computing, server farms and so forth), are the big hidden users that did not exist when I started working in 1970. When I started working in 1970, there was not a desktop calculator, let alone a computer, in the entire company. There was one pitiful copying machine that could copy one page at a time. Faxes had not been invented or at least were not widespread. This was a company that fabricated steel products--the biggest user of electricity was arc welders. OSHA was a new idea and had not promulgated any regulations.

Powering Up

Powering Up

When you think of the Energizer Bunny, you most likely think of a pink bunny rabbit powered by an Energizer battery with unstoppable energy. (It keeps going and going and going...) Side note: if you're outside the US and Canada, replace the Energizer Bunny with the Duracell Bunny. It's this unstoppable energy that powered the Energizer Battery campaign, and we need such unstoppable energy to power our mills, power our cities, and power our lives.

The paper route, shining shoes, the $1,000 dog and $500 cats

I found out the Arkansas Gazette being a Little Rock daily and Sunday newspaper offered jobs to paper route carriers. I could earn $40 per month with a 100-count customer base. I begged my parents to buy me a bicycle so I could earn some really big money. So, just like that, I went from a barefoot country boy to a bicycle riding city slicker!

Let's go to the replay

Most people in society have some sort of "hobby" that brings them joy. It's definitely an integral part of a happy life. By hobby, I mean some sort of activity, mental or physical, that lights a fire in your soul. Gets you off your butt for some part of the day or week. Surrounds you with interesting people that share your passion. You lose track of time while engaging in the activity. You think about getting back to that activity while you're burdened with something else to do - be it work, or errands, or family responsibilities...whatever.
