Sappi to replace Saiccor mill recovery boiler parts in 2027

Sappi Southern Africa plans to replace recovery boiler components at its Saiccor Mill in South Africa during a major outage scheduled for February 2027 to improve operational safety, reduce the risk of unplanned downtime, and improve mill reliability, using an engineering, procurement and construction package supplied by Valmet.

The work will replace the recovery boiler rear wall and economizer in the existing MgO1 boiler, which uses magnesium closed-loop recovery technology. The replacement targets recovery boiler pressure parts at the mill. The scope includes project management, engineering, manufacturing, materials, installation planning, and erection of the replacement pressure parts during the outage. The contract value was not disclosed, and the order was included in the supplier's orders received for the first quarter of 2026.

Sappi operates four mills in South Africa. The Saiccor mill is located south of the port of Durban and has capacity of 890,000 tons of dissolving wood pulp, mainly for viscose staple fibre used in clothing and textiles.
