Smurfit Westrock investing $19.3 million in Saltillo, Mississippi expansion

SALTILLO, Mississippi (From news reports) - Paper and packaging manufacturer Smurfit Westrock is investing nearly $19.3 million to expand its corrugated operations in Saltillo.

The work is expected to be completed in October 2026.

A global leader in sustainable paper and packaging materials with NorthAmerican headquarters in Atlanta, Smurfit Westrock's Saltillo facility produces corrugated packaging such as standard cases, boxes and trays suitable for all industry needs.

The company is purchasing new equipment that will convert flat container board into corrugated boxes. This expansion will increase efficiency within the facility, improve production capacity by 50% and enable the production of larger corrugated boxes.

"Smurfit Westrock is committed to optimizing the performance and value of its manufacturing operations. The expansion of the Saltillo facility demonstrates our ongoing collaboration with development partners in Mississippi, increases capacity and growth within our system and supports the communities where we live and work," said Smurfit Westrock North America President and CEO Laurent Sellier.

The Mississippi Development Authority is providing assistance through the Mississippi Flexible Tax Incentive, or MFLEX, program valued at $289,396 over 10 years. Lee County is assisting with the project, also.

"Projects like this strengthen our communities, grow our economy and show the world we're a place where companies want to put down roots and thrive. We might be a small state, but we compete with the best -- and we're proving every day that Mississippi is one of the top places to do business," said Mississippi Development Authority Executive Director Bill Cork.

Saltillo Mayor Copey Grantham said the expansion will be a boon to the growing Northeast Mississippi city.

"The city of Saltillo is proud to support Smurfit Westrock as they expand their operations, strengthening our economy and creating opportunities for our workforce," Grantham said. "We are grateful to our state and local partners whose commitment makes this significant investment possible."
