I wear a stainless-steel ring on the little finger of my working hand. Engineers in Canada wear an iron ring. Here in the states this means I have taken the "Engineer's Oath." It goes like this:

I am an Engineer.

In the practice of my profession, I shall give the utmost of performance.

To my profession, I pledge my devotion.

To my fellow engineers, I offer my loyalty.

To my community, I promise my service.

To my country, I pledge my allegiance.

To the world, I pledge my responsibility.

I shall strive to promote the health, safety, and welfare of humanity.

I shall practice my profession with integrity, honor, and dignity.

I shall uphold the principles and standards of my profession.

I shall continually improve my knowledge and skills.

I shall be guided by the highest principles of engineering ethics.

The Oath is voluntary. I think it is important. In many mill engineering projects and with many suppliers (who also employ a great number of engineers), performing as the Oath binds one is considered soft. It is considered fun to buck the Oath and take shortcuts or engage in "gotcha" contracts.

Don't do it. Read the Oath again, print it, and stick on your office wall.
