Mondi to build new biomass power plant at its mill in Ružomberok, Slovakia

Mondi announced the construction of a new biomass power plant at its integrated pulp and paper mill in Ružomberok, Slovakia. The new power plant will replace the existing bark boiler and is scheduled for completion in 2027. This investment will increase the mill's energy self-sufficiency from 75% to 90%, providing a more sustainable and reliable energy supply for both the mill and the local community. Mondi SCP is currently supplying district heating in Ružomberok, and once the new power plant is operational, it will be able to further supply energy without relying on natural gas.

The investment will also meet the strictest emission standards and help to further improve air quality, with expected environmental benefits including a 50% reduction in nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions and up to 83% less particulate matter emissions as compared to the old boiler.

The new power plant will utilise residual materials from the pulp and paper production process to generate energy, reducing landfill waste and emissions while increasing the use of renewable energy sources.

Mondi is a global leader in sustainable packaging and paper.
