Mercer Peace River Pulp and Svante begin six-month CO₂ capture demonstration unit

Mercer International Inc.'s subsidiary Mercer Peace River Pulp and Svante Technologies Inc. have started operating a carbon dioxide capture demonstration unit at the Peace River pulp mill in northern Alberta, Canada. The six-month project will test Svante's solid sorbent technology on biogenic CO₂ from the mill's recovery boiler flue gas. The initiative builds on a prior Front-End Engineering and Design study and aims to collect data for potential future commercial deployment at the site, according to Mercer International.

The demonstration phase is intended to evaluate the system's performance in an operational pulp mill environment. Results will help assess the technical and economic feasibility of scaling up the technology to capture biogenic emissions.

Mercer stated that any decision to advance beyond the pilot phase will depend on the outcomes of the test, along with commercial and economic considerations.
