Worker dies following workplace incident in Smurfit Westrock Florence Co., South Carolina facility, officials say

A man died this past week following a workplace incident at Smurfit WestRock in Florence County that left him badly hurt and hospitalized, according to Florence County Coroner Keith von Lutcken.

Lutcken said 51-year-old Mark Anthony Richardson died at the Augusta Burn Center.

The South Carolina Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) confirmed to ABC 15 that they're investigating the workplace incident, according to Holly Beeson with the South Carolina Department of Labor.

Beeson said they're also investigating a separate incident at the plant where a man was hurt.

Smurfit WestRock Director of External Communications, North Carolina, Robby Johnson, released the following statement on the incidents:

"I can confirm an unrelated incident in a separate area of the mill required an employee to be transported to the local hospital on Sept. 16, 2025. Both incidents are under investigation. Safety is a core value at Smurfit Westrock, and the health and well-being of our employees is our first priority. We are working to support both employees and their families."
