Volunteers from Domtar Corporation and the Student Conservation Association Revitalize Port Huron, Michigan's Sanborn Nature Area

PORT HURON, Mich. (News release)) -- Domtar Corporation announced that employee volunteers from the company's paper mill in Port Huron and their families revitalized Sanborn Nature Area, which is adjacent to Sanborn Park. Domtar's Port Huron Mill led the community conservation project with members of the Student Conservation Association, a long-time non-profit partner of Domtar's.

Domtar makes a wide variety of everyday products from sustainable wood fiber, and is one of the world's largest producers of a complete line of absorbent hygiene solutions and an innovator in absorbent technology. Domtar's Port Huron Mill employs more than 260 people in the community. A strong focus on new product development has helped Domtar's Port Huron Mill thrive in specialty paper markets, especially in lightweight and ultra-lightweight publishing, technical and specialty paper grades, primarily used for books, food and medical packaging.

"We have a longstanding relationship with Sanborn Park, and many of our employees and their families regularly enjoy the beauty of its Nature Area, including the trails and wildlife," said April Brockett of Domtar's Port Huron Mill. "We are pleased to partner with the Student Conservation Association to ensure that the Sanborn Nature Area, a community space that is important to us all, is safe, accessible, and enjoyable."

Domtar's employee volunteers, their families and members of the Student Conservation Association helped to maintain trails, removed brush and refreshed picnic tables at Sanborn Nature Area. Adjacent to Sanborn Park, Sanborn Nature Area has a diversity of plant and animal life, and it is frequently used by area teachers and organizations as a resource for nature instruction.

"Caring is one of Domtar's core values--caring for our employees, customers, and the communities we serve, said Domtar Corporate Responsibility Manager, Heather Alverson Stowe. "Sustainability is one of Domtar's community investment focus areas, which is why we lead community conservation projects with non-profit partners like the Student Conservation Association that engage employees, benefit our neighbors, and enrich our environment."

Since 2012, Domtar has partnered with the Student Conservation Association to lead conservation and restoration projects that promote sustainability in the local communities where Domtar operates. The Student Conservation Association provides opportunities for young people to make a positive impact on the world around them by protecting, enhancing, and restoring community green spaces, like Sanborn Nature Area.

"The Student Conservation Association stands for service, stewardship, and sustainability - and local community park conservation projects like this combine all three with equal doses of teamwork and fun," said Student Conservation Association President and CEO Jaime Matyas. "The efforts of Domtar employee volunteers and their families and Domtar's sponsorship have helped preserve this popular park and nature area for future generations to enjoy. SCA is delighted to partner with companies that want to aid our environment and our communities."
