Valmet to start layoff talks covering 40 percent of Finland staff

Valmet will start change negotiations in Finland on May 4 under the Finnish Co-operation Act that may include temporary layoffs of less than 90 days, with possible layoffs implemented from June 2026 through the end of December 2026, Valmet announced.

The planned measures relate to parts of Valmet's Packaging and Paper business area and its Pulp, Energy and Circularity business area, as well as certain functions and the Global Supply unit. The change negotiations cover approximately 2,400 employees from all employee groups in the affected organizations across various Valmet locations in Finland.

Valmet linked the plan to a lower-than-anticipated workload, citing customer-driven project delays, continued weak demand in paper and board machine markets, and continued softness in biomaterials services markets. The company said it expects cost savings of approximately Euro 8 million in 2026 from the temporary measures.

In March 2026, Valmet initiated change negotiations on plans to close manufacturing at its Sundsvall site in Sweden and to make operational changes at facilities in Gothenburg, Sweden, and Jelenia Góra, Poland, affecting up to 170 roles in Sundsvall, up to 55 roles in Gothenburg and up to 130 roles in Jelenia Góra. Valmet said the plans aim to support the long-term competitiveness of its Biomaterial Solutions and Services segment.

Also in March, Chief Financial Officer Katri Hokkanen decided to leave the company to pursue an external opportunity. Hokkanen has worked at Valmet for nearly 20 years and has served as CFO for almost four years, and President and CEO Thomas Hinnerskov said she held several financial leadership roles during her tenure and developed the company's financial management, governance and performance. The company said it will start recruiting a new CFO immediately.
