Train derails at International Paper mill

CARRSVILLE, Va. (From The Tidewater News) -- A CSX train traveling through International Paper's Franklin Mill derailed at 9:15 a.m. on Aug. 9. Twelve cars toppled over onto a train on a track next to it.

"What we know right now is there are no injuries or environmental hazards; we are working with CSX on what was in the cars," Lt. Tommy Potter from the Isle of Wight County sheriff's office said.

Mechanic, South High and South Main streets in downtown Franklin are all closed where they intersect with the CSX line for an undetermined amount of time.

Jenny Railey, spokesperson for IP said, "International Paper works with local emergency response agencies to prepare for and assist with situations like this. We are working with CSX as they develop their path forward."

Update: The Franklin Police Department announced around 3:30 p.m. that Mechanic and South High streets at the CSX intersections are now open, and that all detours and delays should be cleared.
