Starbucks Japan to Switch to Paper Straws
TOKYO (News release) -- Starbucks Coffee Japan Ltd. said Tuesday it will replace plastic straws with paper ones at all of its 1,500 outlets across the nation by mid-March 2020.

Hoping to reduce plastic waste, the Tokyo-based company will also consider replacing containers and other plastic products with those using other materials.

Thick plastic straws for frappuccinos and other drinks will be changed to paper ones in stages from mid-May.

At its outlets in Japan, a total of 200 million plastic straws are used annually, according to the company.

For straws and bags, Starbucks Coffee Japan will use paper that the Forest Stewardship Council certifies as material produced considering the environment.
