Sofidel tissue mill fire in Leicester was started accidentally

ENGLAND (From news reports) -- A fire at a tissue mill that raged over the weekend was started accidentally, the company has said.

The blaze at the Sofidel mill in Hamilton, Leicester, started at 4.25 am on Friday and staff were evacuated while firefighters rushed to put out the blaze.

The company said in a statement: "It has been established without doubt, thanks to the CCTV system, that the origin of the fire was accidental.

"The incident was then formally closed by firefighters, who then returned full accessibility of the site to the company.

"The fire has mainly affected the external insulation of some of the roof covering and some façades of the buildings. No structural damage has occurred to buildings or to production facilities."

About 50 firefighters from across the county and neighbouring fire brigades were involved in fighting the blaze in the mill roof, with the firefighting operation only being scaled down on Saturday morning.

Residents in the area were warned to keep their windows and doors closed, while police were on the scene to close roads near to the blaze.

The company said that while there had been disruption at the Waterside Road site, the other paper mills around the country were able to take up the slack.

The statement said: "We expect one of the two paper machines to be restored within the week. The second requires checks on the electrical distribution systems that, although not directly affected by the fire, need cleaning and restoration to ensure full reliability.

"At present, it is assumed that the production of the second paper machine will be restored by the end of the year as a result of annual maintenance already scheduled in December.

"The temporary stop will not cause customer disruption. The incident has only created minor issues with the paper machines."

No one was injured in the blaze.
