Smurfit Westrock launches innovative Bag-in-Box Powergrip

Smurfit Westrock has launched its new Bag-in-Box Powergrip to help companies comply with forthcoming stricter European packaging regulations (PPWR).

Created by Smurfit Westrock's Turnhout plant in Belgium, the new packaging has been designed to replace traditional High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) bottles and jerrycans from two to five litres.

Powergrip, which can be used for cleaning materials, oils and (agro) chemical products, features cardboard casing and an integrated handle to facilitate one-hand pouring. Thanks to the vacuum bag, the contents do not slosh during pouring, helping to prevent spillage. The design contains up to 75% less plastic than the HDPE alternative and offers improved content protection.

"With the 2030 deadline for European packaging legislation on the horizon, companies must rethink their packaging strategies. For Smurfit Westrock Van Mierlo, the launch of the Bag-in-Box Powergrip demonstrates how innovation can turn regulatory challenges into opportunities, delivering sustainable, practical, and competitive solutions for customers across multiple sectors," said Matthias Hoskens, General Manager at Smurfit Westrock Van Mierlo.

"We see that regulation and sustainability now truly reinforce each other. The Powergrip addresses both and delivers tangible operational benefits to our customers."

Smurfit Westrock Van Mierlo has been operating in Turnhout for over 100 years and specialises in offset-printed packaging for products such as electronics, beer and chocolate. The plant employs around 160 staff, contributing to economic growth in the Kempen region.

Smurfit Westrock is the European leader for Bag-in-Box solutions delivering expertise from films and accessories to bags, taps, boxes, and even filling lines.
