Smurfit Westrock launches consultation process about future of UK paper mill

Smurfit Westrock has announced plans for a consultation process which may lead to the closure of its SSK paper mill in the UK and transition of its capacity to other mills in the European network.

Located in Birmingham, SSK manufactures and supplies approximately 200,000 tonnes of fluting and liner to the UK and Irish corrugated market.

The consultation process decision has been largely driven by challenging external market factors, coupled with the need to optimise the company's UK manufacturing footprint and ensure long-term competitiveness.

The relocation of production would enable Smurfit Westrock to continue supporting its customers with a strong focus on service, quality and innovation, while maintaining a sustainable, long-term presence in the UK paper market.

"Embarking on a consultation process is a difficult but necessary decision to ensure we are aligned with market realities and to strengthen our long-term position," said Pim Wareman, CEO of Smurfit Westrock Recycled Paper Cluster Europe.

"I would like to take this opportunity to recognise the commitment and dedication of our colleagues at SSK over many years."

The final decision regarding the mill's closure will be made following a six-week consultation period beginning on 15th May and, in the event of closure, the 130 impacted colleagues will be offered support, including career assistance and opportunities within the wider group where possible.
