Smurfit Kappa Opens Kent Paper Mill To Boost Profit And Cut Emissions

LONDON (From news reports) - Smurfit Kappa said Thursday it has begun operating a "state-of-the-art" combined heat and power plant at Townsend Hook Paper Mill in Kent, south east England.

The company said the "sophisticated" new plant will reduce emissions and increase profitability.

Smurfit Kappa said the new plant, which provides steam and electricity for the paper machine, will cut the mill's carbon footprint by at least 15%.

The company also believes the new technology will increase the capabilities of the mill to meet the "growing demand" in the UK and Ireland for lightweight containerboard.

Jelte Bouma, chief executive officer of Smurfit Kappa Recycled Paper West, said: "We are delighted to have started operating the new Combined Heat and Power Plant in Townsend Hook a month ahead of schedule.

"The increased capability and efficiencies will help us to deliver an even better service to customers. The environmental benefits associated with the new project are also in line with the wider strategic sustainability priorities of Smurfit Kappa."
