Södra's electricity surplus can supply just over 50,000 Swedish households

Södra will continue to be a significant player in green electricity production by generating electricity from biomass, wind and water in 2024. The amount of surplus electricity from Södra corresponds to the annual household electricity consumption of just over 50,000 single-family homes or the electricity required to power over 120,000 electric cars for one year.

In 2024, the Group produced a total of 1,682 GWh of electricity, which corresponds to just over 120 percent of Södra's annual electricity needs. The surplus amounted to 272 GWh and was delivered to the electricity grid, which is an important contribution to the energy transition. At the same time, district heating was delivered corresponding to the heating needs of 30,000 homes. The district heating consists mainly of heat extracted from the production processes in Södra's industries.

Sustainable electricity production from the forest

The core of Södra's electricity surplus lies in the three pulp mills, where energy extraction from steam drives turbines. This means that Södra not only covers its own electricity consumption, but also contributes to the surrounding society. Long-term energy efficiency improvements and investments have contributed to the Group's electricity production, enabling a stable surplus.

-The need for electricity is growing in step with the electrification of society and we are proud that our industry can contribute with a stable supply of green electricity. Our production is a direct effect of sustainable family forestry and an important part of our work for a greener future. The fact that we can deliver surplus electricity to the electricity grid is an important contribution to the energy transition, says Per Håkansson, responsible for Södra's electricity business.

With a combination of the forest's renewable resources, technical innovations and long-term investments, Södra continues to strengthen energy supply in southern Sweden - an effort that benefits both the group and society at large.

Calculations

According to the Swedish Energy Agency, the average household electricity consumption for a single-family home is approximately 5,700 kWh per year. A single-family home is defined as a detached one- or two-family villa, townhouse or chain-linked house.

According to calculations based on figures from Traffic Analysis, an average passenger car in Sweden drives 1,126 kilometers per year, with an electricity consumption of approximately 2 kWh per kilometer.

The heating requirement for a villa according to the Swedish Energy Agency's table "Energy statistics for single-family homes 2023".
