Reactor blasts at Nagpur pulp factory; 1 worker killed, 5 injured

MUMBAI, India (From news reports) -- One person died and five others sustained injuries after a reactor burst at a factory in Kamptee, around 17 kilometres from Nagpur city, on Tuesday, June 17.

The incident took place around 11 a.m. at the manufacturing unit of Ankit Pulps and Boards Pvt. Ltd., where paper pulp was being processed. The blast occurred when hot pulp was being poured into one of the six reactors on site.

According to the police, the reactor suddenly burst (like a pressure cooker), splashing high-temperature material onto the workers nearby. "It was not a fire-related explosion, but a reactor blast," said Niketan Kadam, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone V), confirming details of the incident.

The identity of the deceased has not been disclosed at the time of publishing, as police continue to investigate the exact cause of the malfunction.

The workers, who sustained burns and other injuries, were rushed to a nearby hospital. The condition of one of the workers is critical. Factory officials said that the injured are stable and responding to treatment.

Families of the workers have been informed, and safety inspections are expected to follow, the police said.
