No injuries after fire at former Whiting Paper Mill in Menasha, Wisconsin

MENASHA, Wisconsin (From news reports) -- No one was injured Sunday, May 2, after a fire at the former Whiting Paper Mill decimated the structure.

Fire crews responded around 7:30 p.m. after smoke and flames were seen coming from the building at 100 River Street, according to Neenah Menasha Fire Rescue.

Officials said fire crews stopped the fire from spreading early Monday morning, and they'll remain on scene to finish extinguishing the fire.

Neenah Menasha Fire Rescue and Menasha police are investigating the fire.

Neenah Menasha Fire Rescue was assisted by Winnebago County dispatch, Menasha police, Menasha utilities, Gold Cross Ambulance, and Neenah, Appleton, Fox Crossing and Harrison fire departments.

The paper mill closed in 2016 after a 134-year history. The mill was known as the George A. Whiting Paper Co. for most of its history, dating to 1882.

In 1888, the mill exploded during a fire, killing 16 spectators and firemen.
