New autopsy findings released for victims of Nippon Dynawave disaster in Longview, Washington

LONGVIEW, Washington (From news reports)The Cowlitz County Coroner's Office has released the cause and manner of death for 10 of the people killed in the tank implosion at the Nippon paper mill in Longview, Wash.

Eleven people were killed in the May 26 incident after a massive tank containing caustic white liquor imploded at the Nippon Dynawave facility.

The coroner's office announced Thursday that it had completed autopsies on 10 victims and concluded its investigation into the fatalities. The autopsies were performed June 1 and June 2.

The cause and manner of death for Dillon Miller were not included in the report since he was taken to a Portland hospital and not in the Cowlitz County Coroner's jurisdiction.

The Multnomah County Medical Examiner's Office listed Miller's cause of death as "sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide burns."

All of the deaths were ruled accidental.

According to the coroner's office, eight victims died from alkaline chemical burns. One victim, 48-year-old Robert Wilson of Clatskanie, Ore., died from alkaline chemical burns and blunt force injuries. Another victim, 38-year-old Braydon Finkas of Cathlamet, Wash., died from alkaline chemical burns and asphyxia due to aspiration of a foreign object.

The coroner's office said all next of kin have been notified and asked the public to respect the families' privacy as they grieve.

Nippon Dynawave has not released additional details about the cause of the accident. State and federal agencies continue to investigate the incident.
