More on Recycling

In a recent press release, it was announced that UPM Adhesive Materials received Recyclass recognitions for its label materials for HDPE container and PET bottle recycling.

The press release states that "UPM Adhesive Materials has received recognitions from RecyClass for its releasable general purpose RW85C adhesive. In addition to the previously acquired approvals, label materials with RW85C adhesive are now recognized to be releasable in the HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) container recycling and alkali/water releasable adhesive in the PET bottle recycling. This means that the approved label materials can be recycled in HDPE natural and white and PET bottle recycling streams, further enhancing recyclability and supporting the circular economy.

Thanks to the immense research of RecyClass, label material producers can now transparently prove their labels do not hinder the recyclability of HDPE and PET packaging. The quality of the highly valued natural and white recyclate can be secured with the right label material, including also the right adhesive technology innovations, which enables the circular economy and enhances sustainability performance. Brand owners will be able to utilize the UPM Adhesive Materials technology approvals to certify their packaging with RecyClass, says Santeri Marjamäki, Manager, Ecosystem, EMEIA, UPM Adhesive Materials."

UPM also recently announced in a press release that UPM Specialty Papers has partnered with EvoPak to support Walkers Chocolates' transition from plastic wrapped to recyclable paper-based packaging.

The press release states that "The collaboration brings together UPM SolideTM Lucent 45 g/m² barrier base paper with EvoPak's RCM coating, creating a fibre-based barrier solution perfect for chocolate and other demanding end-uses. Thanks to its oxygen and grease barriers, the new paper package fulfills Walkers Chocolates' demanding standards for product quality.

Since 2024, Walkers Chocolates has provided recyclable paper packaging for the chocolates it manufactures and supplies for major retailers and international clients. Additionally, several of the company's own products which are packed in UPM Solide Lucent with EvoPak's RCM coating are available in stores across multiple UK retail chains and international markets.

UPM Solide Lucent is a strong and extremely versatile barrier base paper with a unique look and feel. A smooth surface and high density offer superior properties for further converting and printing."

We'll keep you apprised of further developments.
