More on Paper Bottles

In a recent press release, it was announced that Paboco unveils the world's first market ready paper bottle and cap.

The press release states that "Paboco and Blue Ocean Closures have collaborated to create the industry's first market-ready paper bottle and fiber-based cap combination, available today and expected to reach consumers in early 2025.

Paboco, building on years of experience in the advancement and introduction of paper bottle packaging, is applying those learnings to launch a product line including the first ever available combination of paper bottles & fiber-based caps.

Following the mission of repacking the planet, Paboco consistently drives for solutions that improve on what has come before. Creating lasting, impactful change that brings innovation into reality. Partnering with the company Blue Ocean Closures, who have launched a standard closure for solids and pills, to be immediately ready for market use."

In another press release, Stora Enso announced the opening of production unit for dry molded fiber.

The press release states that "The facility is the largest and most advanced of its kind, marking a significant milestone in sustainable packaging technology. Production is set to begin in Q4 2024 after successful large-scale testing.

Stora Enso's Skene Production Unit utilizes PulPac's innovative Dry Molded Fiber process to produce high-performance formed fiber products, such as cup lids, designed to replace traditional plastics in food and beverage packaging. Unlike conventional wet forming, the dry process reduces water and energy consumption significantly, thus offering an even more sustainable manufacturing method for fiber-based packaging. Additionally, any excess material is recaptured and reused, ensuring a circular process with minimal waste."

Diageo, the maker of Guinness, Don Julio Tequila and Smirnoff Vodka, recently announced a first of it's kind 90% paper-based bottle trial for Johnnie Walker Black Label.

The press release states "Created in partnership with PA Consulting, as part of the Bottle Collective with PA and PulPac, this is Diageo's first paper-based 70cl bottle trial in the on-trade. The trial begins tomorrow and will assess how bartenders interact with and pour from the bottle, and how the bottle fares in a bar environment. A total of 250 paper-based bottles will be used with the trial expected to run until mid-October. Members of the public will be able to see the bottles in use behind the bar, however they cannot purchase the bottle.

This will be the second paper-based bottle trial from Diageo and PA, following the success of the Baileys paper-based bottle mini format (80ml) trial, using a similar Dry Molded Fiber innovation at the Time Out Festival in Barcelona earlier this year. The design team have taken learnings from the technical aspects of the miniature format, to make a larger and more complex shape for Johnnie Walker. The bottle's design retains the iconic square shape of Johnnie Walker Black Label, whilst enhancing the premium appeal with unique facets cut into the sides of the bottle and embossing of the Striding Man on the bottle and closure."

We will keep you apprised of further developments.
