Man dies at Greif facility in Virginia

GLADSTONE, Virginia (From the Lynchburg News and Advance) -- An incident at a Greif facility left a North Carolina man dead Monday, according to the Amherst County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's Capt. John Grieser said Eugene Boone, 63, died following an incident around 3:40 p.m. at Greif Inc., though it was unclear where on the property.

Grieser said the man was an employee of Cowan Truck Company. He was unsure whether the company notified the Occupational Health and Safety Administration, which normally leads investigations into industrial deaths.

"We will do a small supplement saying what we saw when we got there, but we're not lead on this one," Grieser said in a phone interview.

A security guard at the mill would not let a reporter onto the premises, referring questions to a human resources department phone number. A woman who answered the phone said, "We have no comment. Thank you," and hung up.

The Lynchburg area office of OSHA could not be reached for comment.

No further information was available Monday evening.
