Machine fire breaks out at Soundview paper mill

PUTNEY, Vermont (From the Rutland Herald) -- Thirteen area fire departments battled a machine fire at the Putney Paper division of Soundview Paper early Tuesday morning.

Putney Fire Chief Tom Goddard said the fire was limited to one of the company's large paper machines and there was no structural damage to the paper mill.

He said that the fire in the machine spread to associated machine ductwork and a hood enclosure. Firefighters worked to prevent the fire from igniting the paper mill dust, and to avoid what he called a "dust explosion."

There was no report of injuries in the fire, which was brought under control at 4:54 a.m.
