Georgia-Pacific shows off its new tissue converting lines in Green Bay

GREEN BAY (From news reports) -- Georgia-Pacific held a ribbon-cutting to celebrate its new tissue converting lines at its Green Bay location.

"It just goes to show that there's a strong paper industry yet in Wisconsin, we're still the number one papermaking state and there's still demand for our products," said Mike Kawleski, Georgia-Pacific public affairs manager.

The $26 million investment includes new equipment and an updated warehouse.

"It's heavily automated," said Tim Ellsworth, Georgia-Pacific vice-president of operations for Green Bay.

Meaning machines do most of the work.

"Which allows more output with the same number or less workers... we operate this area with two people per shift," Ellsworth said. "At this facility, we get all of our fiber in by recycle. We take that recycle, put it into big vats, make a slush out of it, put it across a paper machine. That paper machine makes large parent rolls of paper which then come to a converting operation like this and here we cut it up to the individual user need that goes out to customers."

Construction took about a year.

Our workers here, we take it the extra mile and they've been able to transform the work they do over the last five to seven years to take on more responsibility, conduct the maintenance themselves and truly be more competitive because we can do that," Ellsworth said.
