Former Kimberly-Clark employee pleads guilty to $1.7 million theft

GREEN BAY, Wisconsin (From news reports) -- A former Kimberly-Clark employee accused of stealing more than $1.7 million from the company pleaded guilty in federal court to a related wire fraud charge Monday.

Daniel Kersten of Neenah was employed as a consumer promotion manager when he and Andrew Coleman of North Carolina began the scheme in which the pair ultimately got the large sum -- though they had sought more than $2.2 million, according to court documents.

On Monday morning, Kersten pleaded guilty to the charge that carries a maximum 20-year sentence, according to court records.

Sentencing was scheduled for Aug. 8.

Coleman was charged with wire fraud last week in federal court in connection to the case. A plea hearing is set for May 31.

Texas-based Kimberly-Clark started in Neenah and remains a major employer in the Fox Cities.

Kersten sent fraudulent purchase orders to Coleman and his company, Rogue Two Marketing, for which Coleman sent invoices to Kimberly-Clark, court records state. From July 2016 through February 2017, Kimberly-Clark paid Rogue Two Marketing more than $1.7 million.

Coleman then transferred Kersten's share electronically from North Carolina bank accounts to Kersten's bank account in Wisconsin, and Kersten sent fake invoices in the name of his business to Coleman to make the payments appear legitimate, court records state.

In response to a request for comment when the case was filed against Kersten, Kimberly-Clark spokeswoman Andrea Hopkins wrote in an email that the company "is aware of the federal investigation by the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin. Kimberly-Clark has fully cooperated with the U.S Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation throughout the course of the investigation."

She also wrote that the company "places a premium on driving results through ethical business practices."
