Forklift operator suffers medical emergency; hazmat response triggered by odor at Nippon Dynawave facility in Longview

-- One person was taken to the hospital Wednesday morning, July 1, after what initially appeared to be a hazardous materials incident at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging Company facility in Longview, the site of a deadly chemical tank implosion in May.

Longview Fire Department personnel responded to an emergency medical call involving a male employee who may have suffered a medical emergency while operating a forklift. The situation was upgraded to a hazardous materials response after crews received a report of an overturned sulfuric acid container and detected a strong acrid odor in the area from an unknown source.

Employees told fire officials the container was empty or nearly empty, and investigators did not find a spill. Based on evidence at the scene, officials believe the forklift, which was carrying the container, veered into a dip, causing the container to tip off the forklift. Officials suspect the forklift may have veered because the operator experienced a medical emergency, though that cannot be confirmed.

Crews isolated the area, evacuated personnel, and searched the isolation zone, finding no additional victims and no hazardous materials release.

Fire officials said the odor was determined to be hydrogen sulfide, likely coming from a nearby sewer and unrelated to the medical emergency.

The call was dispatched at 7:24 a.m., with units from Longview Fire and Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue responding. The first unit arrived at 7:27 a.m.

Additional medical information was not released.
