SOLVAY, N.Y. (From news reports) -- One firefighter was taken to a hospital for a minor head injury and some property was damaged during a blaze at a Solvay industrial facility Tuesday night, April 7.
An industrial fire at Smurfit Westrock Solvay Mill on Industrial Parkway was reported at about 9:45 p.m. April 6, according to Onondaga County 911.
The Solvay Fire Department said in a Facebook post that firefighters arrived at 9:48 p.m., locating fires throughout a cardboard drying unit and the ventilation system, which spread the blaze across three floors. The sprinkler system activated, but it couldn't contain the flames.
The department said property damage at the facility was limited to the drying unit and ventilation system. One firefighter was taken by an ambulance to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse for a minor head injury, but he was later released.
The blaze was extinguished in about 45 minutes, the department said, adding that personnel exposed hidden smoldering fires for another 90 minutes.
Fifty firefighters responded to the scene, including from the Lakeside Fire Department in the hamlet of Lakeland and departments in Fairmount, Liverpool and Taunton.
