Fire hits Enviva pellet dome holding 20,000 tons at Pascagoula port in Mississippi

MISSISSIPPI (News release) -- A fire broke out Monday, Oct. 20, inside a wood pellet storage dome operated by Enviva at the Port of Pascagoula, triggering emergency efforts to control the incident and protect surrounding infrastructure.

The blaze affected one of two domes storing compressed wood pellets. Jackson County officials said there was no danger of explosion, and the fire appeared contained within the structure. Crews began offloading 20,000 metric tons of pellets as part of the response.

Jackson County Emergency Management Director Earl Etheridge told WLOX News that the company used pressurized nitrogen to suppress the fire by reducing oxygen levels. Ventilation hatches were sealed to smother the flames, and light smoke was visible from the dome.

Enviva said Tuesday that all personnel on site were safe and that the incident remains under investigation. The company is coordinating with local fire crews and port authorities.
