Essity's coreless technology expands to new markets and categories

Stockholm (News release) - Essity, a global leader in hygiene and health, is progressively expanding its unique coreless innovation to new categories and markets. This groundbreaking technology eliminates the need for a central cardboard tube, resulting in long-lasting double rolls and significantly reducing waste and CO2 emissions. This year, Essity is applying its coreless advanced feature to Lotus Just-1 in France, a best-in-class toilet paper recognized for its quality, where one sheet can be enough. The product is wrapped in paper packaging further enhancing its sustainability credentials.

Expanding categories and markets

Originally introduced in 2018 after 7 years of Research and Development Essity's coreless technology has progressively been applied to several product categories, from toilet paper to household towels. The principle is simple: no tube to dispose after use and long-lasting double rolls, so twice as much toilet paper per roll. A practical and more sustainable solution for the families and the users.

This Essity proprietary and patented technology has already been introduced in several markets across Europe in France, Germany, UK, Benelux, Finland, Switzerland and Spain. In 2025, the launch of Lotus Just-1 coreless toilet paper in France (a best-in-class toilet paper, so big & thick that one sheet can be enough) will be followed by Germany under the Zewa brand in Q4-2025, with further expansion to other European markets planned for 2026-27.

Commitment to sustainability and innovation

Essity's coreless technology represents a significant advancement in product innovation and sustainability. It allows Essity to reduce waste and CO2 emissions. For instance, Essity's coreless toilet paper products and household towels achieve a reduction of CO2 emissions of up to 6%(1). Their compact format allows to reduce by one-third the number of trucks and warehousing space required to transport and store the same quantity of products.

In addition, by removing the core and replacing plastic packaging with paper made from renewable materials for the Lotus Just-1, Essity has created a product that not only meets the evolving needs of consumers but also aligns with the company's climate targets and ambition to reduce carbon emissions.

Essity is the first and the only company that has established Coreless toilet paper and household towels in consumer markets. The coreless technology is a testament to Essity's dedication to driving profitable growth and enhancing market penetration through sustainable innovations, superior product quality and rewarding consumer experience.
