Employees evacuated from Smurfit Westrock Joplin, Missouri facility following machine fire

JOPLIN, Mo. (From news reports) -- Emergency crews responded to an incident in east Joplin on Tuesday, July 15.

Around 6:30 p.m., emergency crews were dispatched to the Smurfit Westrock facilities on the corner of 32nd and Duquesne.

Deputy Fire Chief Andy Nimmo said that the response was due to a machine fire in the facility. Employees were evacuated from the building while crews put out the fire.

Deputy Chief Nimmo says firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the flames shortly after arriving. Employees were allowed back inside around 7:00 p.m. when it was deemed safe.

No injuries have been reported, and there is no significant damage to the facility.

According to the company's website, Smurfit Westrock is a manufacturer of sustainable paper and packaging. In Joplin, Smurfit Westrock primarily manufactures corrugated cardboard and paper-based packaging solutions.
