AUBURN, Maine (From WGME) -- An Auburn mill is closing its doors Friday. The company that owns Cascades Auburn Fiber says it is shutting down due to poor sales.

45 employees are losing their jobs.

Last month, the Canadian-based company announced it would close the doors at the mill on Lewiston Junction Road Friday. Production stopped last week.

Cascades Auburn Fiber is known for making packaging and tissue paper products out of mostly recycled material. The pulp mill is one of several to close in Maine over the last few years.

Company officials say they've tried to adapt, but a lack of demand for products paired with poor market conditions was too much to overcome.

The vice president of communications for Cascades Inc. told the Sun Journal about half of the plant's employees have found other jobs within the company, but there are concerns not just about how this is affecting employees but the entire city.

According to the Sun Journal, the Auburn Sewer District superintendent says the sewer district could lose as much as half a million dollars in revenue with the mill closure. That's approximately 1/8 of its annual revenue.
