Ahlstrom's Mosinee, Wisconsin facility announces closure of two paper machines, pulp mill

MOSINEE, Wis. (From news reports) - Ahlstrom announced Thursday, Feb. 26, it will close two of its four paper machines and the pulp mill at its Mosinee facility.

The pulp mill and one paper machine will cease operations June 30, 2026. A second paper machine will cease operations Sept. 30, 2026. The changes will affect approximately 200 employees. Two hundred employees are expected to stay on staff.

What the company said

"This difficult decision is not a reflection of our Mosinee employees' commitment to their work or the mill," said Tricia Schwartz, communications manager for North America. "We fully recognize the uncertainty this creates for our employees and their families, and we are committed to supporting them through this transition."

About the Mosinee mill

The company cited rising costs and limited automation as ongoing challenges at the site. Ahlstrom said the changes are intended to refocus the mill on more modern competitive production, supported by future reinvestment in new technologies and automation for the remaining paper machines.

The Mosinee mill produces specialty base papers for niche markets including building and construction materials, food packaging, and tape. Ahlstrom acquired the mill in 2018.
