In 1913, the University of Maine in Orono launched the first pulp and paper engineering program in the US. Thirty-seven years later, in 1950, a group of the program's alumni, attending Paper Week in New York, decided to set up the University of Maine Pulp and Paper Foundation to attract and support students who were intent on careers in the pulp and paper industry. Today, that foundation is the oldest of its kind. It has the largest endowment and attracts and supports the largest numbers of people engaged in pulp and paper undergraduate study.

The US Department of Commerce has determined that Canadian super-calendered paper imports are "unfairly subsidized" and is applying a duty of 20.33% to paper from the Port Hawkesbury mill, and lesser rates to paper from three other mills. The decision is subject to various review processes, but takes effect immediately in the sense that the duty must be paid and held in trust, pending a final decision. I will not compete with the crowd of Canadian and US lobbyists and lawyers by attempting to analyze the true balance of the subsidy situation, but I have to wonder how anyone can make an honest, rational analysis of what is fair in such a complex issue.

Verso Paper Corp. announced Thursday it plans to lay off 300 people at its mill in Jay and another 310 at a mill in Kentucky at the end of this year or in early 2016.

The added volume will be marketed to the joint venture company's existing applications and geographical markets. The investment by LignoTech is estimated at approximately US$ 8.5 million, and the project is expected to be completed in 2017.

The production plant has an annual capacity of 35,000 tons. Production will be discontinued in October 2015.

Two years after Atlanta-based Georgia-Pacific acquired Memphis-based Buckeye Technologies in a $1.4 billion deal, the combined company, GP Cellulose, has invested $20 million in capital construction and maintenance projects at its Memphis facilities.
