Fire breaks out at Graphic Packaging in Kalamazoo, Michigan

KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich. (From news reports) -- A fire broke out at a Graphic Packaging facility in Kalamazoo, Michigan on Friday night.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said that crews got the fire under control, but it was still a very active scene as they cleaned up the mess left behind.

Police said the fire broke out as a Graphic Packaging employee was using machines to lift and move bales of thin paper. Police said they were not certain exactly what caused the fire, but the amount of paper in the facility definitely did not help matters.

No one was injured. and the facility was expected to be back up and running shortly after the fire was extinguished.

"It's not unusual for us at places that work with paper products, machinery gets gummed up with paper and stuff like that that caught on fire. This time it just happened to be bales of paper that caught on fire," said Lieutenant Lance Handlogten, with KDPS.
