On being "let go"


After working for about 7 years (and 4 supervisors) in the technical department of a paper mill, I was called into my current supervisor's office on a Friday afternoon. From the feel of the situation, I suspected I was getting let go. After it started, I tried to calm the guy down, as he seemed very nervous. I was told I had time to search for a new job, after which I was to resign. My response was that I could only complete some projects. To shorten the story, when I was ready to leave about six months later, my supervisor had a going away party and commended my work, the finished projects. Some lessons and comments, always document your work as it progresses, limit the number of projects being worked on at a given time, and (comment) back in 1963, being “let go” was more humane, but  still stressful.
