Have you seen “Blues Brothers”? The “car chase through the mall” scene was done in a closed mall. From this article, it appears they are just now (30+ years later) getting around to tearing it down. So it would appear that these sit around for a while. Lots of land (parking lot) also for ancillary use (water treatment, etc).
A point of trivia – apparently all of the cars in the parking lot were new cars from dealerships.
