Liner Board, Beds and Movies

The paper industry use to be cyclic, perhaps it still is.  But in the not too distant past, the managers of the then Union Camp seemed to hold magic, similar to John Wooden of UCLA basketball fame.  Mr. Wooden was a master of winning close games.  The guys who ran Union Camp seemed to have the touch of knowing the market.  They almost always had the company ready to weather a downturn and take advantage of an upswing.  They also had an advantage with fine paper.  It was hugely profitable in those days.  Don’t think that any grades have big margins today.  Someone “in the know” chime in here.

I like the continuing point of sales feature of displaying articles in their card board box.  Good for the Prattville Mill!  Just so the liner comes from here.

Two weeks ago we bought a king sized bed at a friend’s store in Montgomery, AL.  The bed came within two weeks from their warehouse completely disassembled in two very heavy boxes.  It was made in Malaysia.  There was no shipping damage.  I was impressed.  No instructions either.  Fear not.  I logged on line and found a 9 page pdf assembly booklet in three clicks. True story.  Click one got me to the store’s web page.  Click two was a search within the store of the exact item.  Click three opened the item’s assembly manual listed on the item’s page.   Well, I did print it, so I guess that’s four clicks.  I looked in vain for an assembly robot.  Oh well, four hours later I was finished with one small screw to spare.  Asleep on the new bed by midnight.  And it came in a box.  No wood reinforcement.  Just foam inside at the corners and between pieces.

Spring break is upon us.  Many had theirs last week from the proliferation of Indiana cars heading North yesterday.  We’re staying here because we have a trip to NYC coming up for daughter’s graduation from Vet school in June.

Last, “The Hunger Games” phenomenon has begun, on the heels of the “Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.”   I’m a huge fan of the latter having read all three books and seen all three Swedish movies more than once (highly recommended BTW, but only for adults).  We’ll see how the USA version stacks up on DVD this week.  Reminds me of 1977 when “Star Wars” hit the screens.  Some of my friends saw that movie a dozen times in the theaters.
