The End

Hello Jim,

After thinking all week about how to respond to your latest tirade (pun intended) about retirement and about all the scenarios about it, there seems to be no response I can put together that covers so many angles from my perspective as those you covered, something that could take pages and pages.  For one, I didn't plan on retiring, I wasn't going to retire.  My idea was to work on indefinitely.  Then the company I was working for (20 years) made an offer that was too difficult to refuse.  Even with two kids still in college, it was still a no brainer to take the offer.  Even with assets totaling considerably less than a half million, in 1987 our lifestyle didn't change but even saw more spending.  The best plan may be not to think in terms of retiring, but it terms of continuing to do things in a way that is living and not retiring from it, such as you have been doing, and perhaps the way mine has been done, though in different paths but somehow rewarding to us and those around us.

Readers--You'll want to check the responses in the "What do you think?" Department, too.
