Worker dies after accident at QuadGraphics

WEST SADSBURY, Pennsylvania (From the Daily Local News) - A 44-year-old man was pronounced dead at Brandywine Hospital on Friday 20 March 2015 following an industrial accident at a QuadGraphics facility, according to township's police department.

Police did not release the name of the victim, but confirmed he was an employee of QuadGraphics, where the incident took place around 6 p.m. on Friday.

Police said the employee was attempting to clear a clog in a book baler when the accident took place. While the victim was inside the machine the clog cleared, causing a load of paper circulars to fall onto the man.

The victim was transported to the hospital by ambulance while in cardiac arrest, but was later pronounced dead. The official cause of death is still under investigation, police said, but the victim likely died from suffocation or crushing injuries.

Fire officials with the Keystone Valley Fire Department said the machine had a conveyor which feeds books into a hopper and shredder, and the books are then bound in a baler. Firefighters worked to removed the pile of books from the victim and were later able to free him through an access door in the machine.

The West Sadsbury facility is a print production site.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing. The Keystone Valley Fire Department and paramedics from the Brandywine Hospital also assisted at the scene.
