DUBLIN (News release) -- Smurfit Kappa has partnered with Belgian speciality brewer Kasteel Brouwerij Vanhonsebrouck to offer alternatives to its shrink film packaging.
The partnership complements various brewery initiatives, created to implement a circular supply chain. It involves using recyclable cans to replace glass, removing plastic and offering future-proof packaging solutions.
As part of the proposed initiatives, the paper packaging firm recommended using a 100% recyclable paper-based solution. According to the company, the sustainable alternative will allow the brewery to eliminate shrink film from its portfolio.
The new Smurfit Kappa packaging includes an in-built handle for easier carrying.
Kasteel Brouwerij Vanhonsebrouck CEO Xavier Vanhonsebrouck said: "It was very nice to be able to discuss our plans with Smurfit Kappa because they also have a culture of innovation and worked with us to find the right solution. We have the perfect packaging for the future now."
The new packaging also complements Smurfit Kappa's sustainable packaging solutions portfolio for canned products.
The packaging firm noted that various customers have started using paper-based packaging as an alternative this year.
Smurfit Kappa Europe CEO Saverio Mayer said: "The Kasteel Brouwerij Vanhonsebrouck has a lot of exciting plans to expand into new markets and an ever-growing product range that we are looking forward to collaborating with them on.
"Both our companies share a deep commitment to sustainability and the Smurfit Kappa Better Planet Packaging initiative opens up a world of possibilities for us both."
