BIRON, WIS. (From news reports) -- A nearly $200 million paper mill project in Wood County will get state support while helping to create more than two dozen jobs.

The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) announced $1.7 million in tax credits Wednesday for ND Paper in Biron, which is just north of Wisconsin Rapids.

ND Paper plans to convert a machine from making white paper into corrugated material for boxes. The company will also build a recycled pulp, water treatment, and fiber recovery plants. The total cost of the project is $189 million.

The company will only get the state tax credits if it creates 27 new jobs and invests in the construction projects itself over the next three years.

The company employs more than 300 workers already. ND Paper also owns mills in Maine and West Virginia, employing about 1,200 people total.

"These strategic investments not only create 27 new positions, but also preserve the jobs of our existing workforce," ND Paper CEO Ken Liu said in a press release. "Our vision is to transform the Biron division into a world-class facility that is sustainable for the next 100 years."
