WASHINGTON (From news reports) -- A blaze at the Georgia-Pacific facility on Fones Road Monday afternoon started when a piece of machinery caught on fire, an Olympia fire official said Tuesday.

About noon Monday, June 9, Olympia fire crews, and several other fire departments, were dispatched to the longtime manufacturer.

The plant produces corrugated cardboard that is used to make boxes. A piece of industrial machinery caught on fire and those flames reached up to the ceiling, damaging a portion of the structure, said Deputy Chief of Operations Mike Buchanan. He estimated the ceiling height at 40 feet.

Meanwhile, Georgia-Pacific had evacuated its workers and shut off the power to the building, Buchanan said. No injuries were reported, he said. Fire crews were on scene from noon to about 6 p.m. and then a crew stayed overnight to keep an eye on the building.

No new fires were reported, he said. Olympia fire received support from Lacey, Tumwater, McLane/Black Lake, East Olympia and West Thurston fire crews. Intercity Transit also provided a bus that firefighters could use as a place to cool off because Monday's high temperature was near 90 degrees.

Georgia-Pacific issued a statement through a spokeswoman Tuesday afternoon.

"We appreciate the rapid response by the Olympia, Lacey, Tumwater, McLane/Black Lake, East Olympia and West Thurston fire crews and other first responders to address the fire at our box plant in Olympia on Monday, June 9th," the statement reads. "The fire is now out, and we are thankful there were no injuries. We are investigating how the fire started and have begun the cleanup process. The facility will be back in operation as soon as it is safe to do so."

The fire damage is significant, but the estimated cost of those damages was not immediately known, Buchanan said.
