Metsä Board shuts down board production at Tako mill in Finland | Metsa, closure, layoffs,

FINLAND (News release) -- Metsä Board ended board production at its Tako mill in Tampere, Finland, on June 17 after shutting down board machine BM1. The closure removed 210,000 tonnes of folding boxboard capacity--about 13% of the company's total--and followed change negotiations announced in March as part of efforts to improve profitability and cost competitiveness, according to Metsä Board Corporation.

A total of 191 employees were affected by the closure. By the shutdown date, 95 had secured new roles, supported through internal recruitment at other Metsä Group mills, coordination with employment authorities, and job coaching. Further placements depend on employee willingness to relocate.

Tako's board production has been transferred to the Kyro mill. Customer deliveries continue without interruption. The company credited mill personnel for maintaining high-quality operations until the final days.

Post-closure work has started with the cleaning and emptying of machines, tanks, and pipes. Full dismantling of production equipment is planned for 2026, with internal cleaning to finish by the end of 2025. A building permit process is underway for dismantling external equipment, while future use of the site remains undecided.
