GREEN BAY, WI (From news reports) -- After 122 years, an iconic Green Bay paper mill has closed.

Georgia-Pacific ended operations at its Day Street mill Friday.

The mill holds a special place in the city's history. It's the birthplace of Quilted Northern Tissue and a big reason Green Bay is recognized as the "toilet paper capital of the world."

Since the closure was announced in March of 2022, current employees continued to maintain and operate the facility as safely and productively as possible. Most of those employees have joined other Georgia-Pacific facilities in the Green Bay area.

The closure is part of the company's $500 million plan to expand its Broadway mill that will add roughly 500 new jobs. The expansion is scheduled to be operational for the first half of 2024.
