SUSSEX, Wisconsin (From news reports) -- A fire inside a paper-processing machine at a Quad Graphics plant in Sussex took firefighters just over an hour to extinguish Sept. 15, with no injuries reported, according to a news release from the Sussex Fire Department.

Firefighters responded to the Quad Graphics plant around 9:44 a.m. after receiving a report of a paper-processing machine on fire. When fire crews arrived on the west side of the building, they saw smoke coming through an open overhead door.

Plant employees directed firefighters to the machine through severely limited visibility. Crews advanced a hose line, but due to the size of the building and the initially unknown severity of the fire, the incident commander requested mutual aid from surrounding areas.

The fire was eventually contained to a two-story paper-processing machine, but limited access to the machine complicated efforts to extinguish it.

Crews successfully extinguished the fire after just over an hour. The fire department said 15,000 gallons of water and foam were used.

No injuries involving Quad Graphics employees or fire crews were reported. The building sustained no structural damage. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and damage estimates were not immediately available.

Fire departments from Merton, Menomonee Falls, Pewaukee, Richfield, Hartland and Lake Country Fire & Rescue assisted the Sussex Fire Department. The Waukesha County Sheriff's Department also assisted with the response.
