Which of Jim's wild and crazy ideas do you think is most practical?

In my column last week, we asked "Which of the wild and crazy ideas do you think is most practical?"

The leading response was "Incoming water lines and outgoing effluent lines," followed by "They are all good."

Then, we asked, "Do you have any wild or crazy ideas? If so, please share...."

Responses:

Variable-thickness insulated coatings on the inside or outside of lead dryer cans on fine paper grades to allow thermocompressors to be used on these sections to recover blowthrough steam and eliminate the need for vacuum condensers.

I know that there are ground source heat systems using heat pump technology to make energy efficient homes. These currently have a very long payback period but the technology is getting better. Another potential way of capturing already purchased energy for reuse is to store it in the ground under the mill for extraction to areas where needed. Also, this could work for mills with varied seasons for building heating in the winter and cooling in the summer.

I have experience with using a wide gap heat exchanger to recover heat from the effluent to heat water for use in the mill - also solved a problem with effluent thermal shock.

Off the wall question of the week--One of our great advertisers that affords us the opportunity to bring you all of our publications for free is Talo Analytic International. What is their product or service?

Answer: Strategic Consulting

This week's quiz can be found here.

Jim goes over the Quiz results during the Tech Center Show on Pulp & Paper Radio International every Monday.
