What can the industry do to assist in the Ebola crisis

In my column last week, we asked, "When it comes to pulp and paper product development (not biofuels or other material development), do you think..."

75 percent responded, "The industry has lost its way," 25 percent answered "The industry is doing as much as ever," and the remaining 25 percent answered "Everything has been invented."

Then, we asked, "How do you think the industry can assist in the Ebola crisis?"

Here are the responses:

>Insert micro - encapsulated sterilizing compound into the structure of a fiber towel and fabric sheet. The compound is released when the towel is used for wiping and the fabric when used in bedding.

>Be creative--as per your ideas. New product development in current mainstream management is not there in my opinion -- it used to be --- P&G R&D use to be -- or perhaps carbonless paper by 3m or NCR was -- or even Champion, Boise, or even Nashua. This does not answer the Question directly as most of names are no longer relevant. The question has to be asked in morning meetings - not just in R&D.

>Broaden the focus on sanitary papers and wipes, and fund research at the few remaining paper schools rather taking the Georgia Tech/Auburn approach and focusing everything on "the new forest products biorefinery." This should be an area for Agenda 2020, Agenda 2030, NIS and government research grant funding.

>Write thousands of letters to congressmen, senators and president requesting all flights from Africa to the NA continent be stopped.
