Weighing in on 'Contradiction?'

In my column last week, we asked "Do you now have a conflict between "getting something done" and "integrity"?"

88.2 percent of respondents answered "No," and 11.8 percent said "Yes."

Then, we asked, "Do you think that "getting something done" can involve career risks?"

88.2 percent responded "No," and 11.8 percent said "Yes."

Our third question was, "Do you think that "getting something done" can involve career rewards?"

88.2 percent said "Yes," and 11.8 percent responded "No."

Finally, we asked "Any other comments?"

Responses:

>I believe Communication would be a key factor in maintaining integrity while getting things done. Most of the time, talking things over with the people in charge of making the rules (or enforcing them) can clear the way for work to get done, and in some cases a better plan will come about in the process.

>I know that my answers to 2 & 3 are opposing in nature, but I have witnessed, on occasion first hand, punishment for accomplishments that could not be attained by others.

>I knew running the light is OK. I have done this on left red arrows when nobody is approaching and I can see far enough.

>I've always tried to have integrity - small farm community values plus school teach mother. In the corporate world, in getting things done, I always tried to be ethical and avoid doing something that would embarrass the company. But it also made me unpopular with the people who hadn't thought of it and hadn't approved it. I paid a heavy price for that, but my conscience is clear. As a consultant, I'm much better off. The company by-line, it's on our letter head, is "We make things happen". That is fair warning that my focus is on accomplishment and on my confidence that if a client doesn't like me, I'm okay parting the ways - the phone will ring again in a week or two. That I learnt from your consultant webinar series for which I am always grateful.
