Quad/Graphics plant in Tennessee closing in March

DICKSON, Tennessee (From The Tennessean) -- Company officials announced Wednesday (17 December 2014) that the Dickson Quad/Graphics plant will close permanently on March 12, impacting about 115 employees.

The plant shuttering was caused by Gannett's decision to cease publishing USA Weekend and the reduced circulation of Parade magazine, according to company spokesperson Claire Ho.

"We will begin stepping down operations immediately. All production will wrap up on or before March 12, 2015," said Ho in an email to The Herald. "This morning we met with employees in our Dickson, Tenn., facility to share the difficult news that the company is closing the plant.

"The plant closure is a necessary business decision resulting from Gannett's recent, unexpected decision to cease publishing USA Weekend, effective with the December 28 issue and Athlon Media Group's decision to change its rate base for Parade magazine, resulting in reduced circulation," she added.

Ho said USA Weekend and Parade production represent "about one-third of the plant's total volume."

"The plant cannot remain competitive and profitable without this work and, therefore, we made the difficult decision to close the plant," Ho said. "Out of respect for our employees and their families, we chose to share the news as soon as we knew the outcome."

The approximately 90 full-time and approximately 25 part-time employees impacted the closure will have the opportunity to transfer to another Quad/Graphics facility, Ho said.

The company, which is based in Sussex, Wis., has facilities in Nashville and in Franklin, Ky. Quad/Graphics has nearly 60 plants nationwide.

Ho said that in "coming weeks," the company would hold career fairs at the Dickson Quad/Graphics facility for employees to learn about the "many opportunities" available at the other Quad/Graphics plants.

"We value the talent and commitment of our employees in Dickson and we would like for them to remain employed with our company," Ho said.
