Georgia-Pacific employee killed in accident

BIG ISLAND, Virginia (From the Lynchburg News and Advance) -- An employee killed Wednesday in an industrial accident at the Georgia-Pacific mill in Big Island was identified as Robert C. Dameron, 44, of Natural Bridge.

Dameron died after falling into a machine, the Bedford County Sheriff's Office said Thursday.

Georgia-Pacific spokeswoman Zoe Myers previously told The News & Advance the accident occurred in a paper machinery pulping area.

Authorities were alerted of the accident at 8:50 p.m. via a call to Bedford County 911 dispatchers.

According to the Bedford County Sheriff's Office, the Virginia Department of Labor will investigate Dameron's death.

Myers told The News & Advance Wednesday the company will conduct an internal investigation.

She said they are working with authorities to determine the cause of the incident.

The paper mill employs more than 300 workers in Bedford County, and is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year.
